FlipsTips February 2012

I am reviewing two utilities I use frequently on my PC.  They are IconRestorer FreeSoftLand and VueScan from Hamrick.  Let’s start with IconRestorer.  In an event that a computer crashes, if automatic desktop icons placement is selected, or if the screen resolution is changed there is the possibility that the icons shortcuts position on the Windows desktop becomes scrambled. IconRestorer has been designed to remember the icon setup to avoid the boring job of manual restoring for the right icons position on the desktop after these events.  This application is very helpful because If I move a lot of icons by accident; I don’t have to move them to their previous spot manually.  I can save a session with the positions of my icons are to make it easier for me.  Icon Restorer has a few good features but not much.  It allows the user to save his/her wallpaper if Windows makes any changes to the desktop automatically and delete the user’s favorite picture.  There’s an option for saving while the PC is shutting down.  Users can back up the sessions of their icons on the desktop.  I don’t recommend this option because it’ll slow the PC’s shutdown speed.  There is a special edition for more features of Icon Restorer if users want more of that’s application.  Users can donate money to the developer(s).  Overall, Icon Restorer is a very useful utility for people who have disabilities.  I’m giving it my full five stars.  Great Job FreeSoftLand!

VueScan is an Alternative I use for scanning documents and pictures.  VueScan is an easy-to-use replacement for the software that came with the scanner and supports most flatbed scanners, printer/scanners and film scanners.   Whether users are looking for more advanced features that your scanner vendor doesn't provide, or the scanner vendor no longer supports the user’s scanner, VueScan helps beginners or advanced users get the most out of the scanner. It’s a tiny application and it hardly uses system resources.  It installs matter of seconds and it has one folder on the “C” drive. This application has tons of features and I can’t write all of them down, therefore I only talk about the interface.  It has tabs across at the top as such the input, crop, filters, the color and the output where the files can be saved.  It has a huge preview page to edit a picture or a document.  The scan is absolutely fast and it took five seconds to scan a picture.  That’s fast considering it is only software.  In addition to sending via Email and saving to the Photos App, VueScan has a mobile function allows users to save scanned images to the user’s favorite apps that can open PDF or JPEG files to an iBooks, Dropbox, GoodReader, Evernote, etc.  It has gotten awards from The Washington Post, Mac World, Advanced Photoshop, PC Mag, PC World and more.  VueScan isn’t free but users can download a demo.  I totally recommend buying the application and it’ll be worth the money.  I’m giving it my full five stars.  Great Job Hamrick!
